Thought Leadership

Often used interchangeably with ‘content marketing’, thought leadership is actually a specific type of content marketing with different aims and a different make up.

To truly be thought leadership, content must be rooted in data, offer guidance or advice, and contain ideas that demand the audiences attention. Additionally, it should be additive to the conversation delivering new insights or points of view, and almost always it needs to be personal — organisations don’t ‘know’ things, people do.

More general content marketing is less dependent on these factors for success. Pieces can focus more on entertainment than education. To be a thought leader you need to have, and incite, some thoughts.

Thought leadership content is also something that should be approached from the editorial angle. It is not about the overt selling of goods or services. It is about providing genuine benefit to the audience such that they come to trust you, learn from you and then buy from you.
